Consultation has concluded

The Municipal Tree Canopy Policy applies to all municipally owned trees and vegetation. The policy does not propose to change any current practices but rather provides clarity in terms of how the City achieves compliance with the requirement for municipal tree protection under the Municipal Act. The tree canopy policy does not apply to trees or vegetation on private property and as such, there are no implications for private property owners.

The outcome from this policy is to satisfy the Municipal Act requirements outlined in Section 270 of the Act by adopting a consolidated policy that describes how we provide oversight and protection of our municipal tree canopy.

Municipal Act Requirement:

Municipalities are required to maintain policies with respect to the protection and enhancement of municipal trees and natural vegetation. The Draft Municipal Tree Canopy Policy will ensure the City of Sarnia complies with this requirement in Section 270 of the Municipal Act, which states that municipalities shall adopt and maintain a policy with respect to the protection and enhancement of the tree canopy and natural vegetation in their municipality.

Existing Framework for the Municipal Tree Canopy:

The City of Sarnia presently has a number of tools to protect and enhance municipally owned trees and the urban canopy they create, as well as our natural areas and vegetation within our public parks spaces. The existing suite of plans, by-laws, and programs work together to support the proposed Tree Canopy Protection and Enhancement Policy, and as such, are included in the Draft Policy.
